Silhouette of two zebras and a lone acacia tree on the African savanna under a giant orange sun with a flock of birds in flight.
In wildlife photography, you can plan for the location and the light, but you can never plan for the magic.
It was late June 2024 in the Naboisho Conservancy, Kenya. We spent the entire day traversing the savanna with a very specific vision in mind: a lone, iconic acacia tree on the western horizon, surrounded by life, under a sun softened by just the right amount of cloud cover.
The Setup
After hours of searching, we finally found the perfect stage—a solitary tree with a herd of zebras grazing nearby. To keep the tree perfectly on the horizon line, we positioned ourselves at a distance. Per local laws, we remained inside the vehicle, bracing a tripod against the frame to steady my 600mm lens.
I dialed in a fast shutter speed of 1/2000s, prepared to freeze any sudden movement in the fading light. Then, we waited.
The "Gift"
Right as the sun began its final descent, the unexpected happened. A massive flock of birds appeared, dancing back and forth, rising and falling in a rhythmic cloud. It lasted only a minute. In that "decisive moment," I fired over 100 frames, tracking the motion as the birds swarmed into the heart of the golden sun.
This image is the best of that series—the one where the composition, the light, and the wild energy of Africa aligned for a single, perfect second.
